Microcredit

From our archives. Published on 29.03.2011. Dates, figures and circumstances refer to this historical account.

In May 2007, we established a microcredit structure in the Gitarama region, particularly in Ruhango and Kamonyi. We started the same project in the Nyamasheke region in 2009.

Two volunteers from our Luxembourg association stayed for two months, in June and July 2007, to oversee the programme’s launch.

The situation described in this report

Ruhango, Kamonyi and Nyamasheke

We granted 800 widows a microloan of €100 each for 18 months. Most were still making repayments at the time of the report.

Before joining the programme, each woman receives a visit from our volunteers to assess whether her proposed activity is viable.

Our coordinator then visits regularly to monitor the activity, check for major difficulties and help find solutions when necessary. She also follows up on regular repayments.

Funding

All loans were funded by Femmes Développement from its own budget. Our funds came exclusively from our activities, including the annual Charity Dinner, candle sales and other events; regular donations from loyal supporters; and the sponsorship of specific projects by interested donors.
