During a visit to groups of widows in our microcredit programme, we learned that poor eyesight was a major problem. The literacy classes we wanted to offer would only be possible if this issue was addressed. According to the original report, it affected 90% of the widows we were supporting.
We found an ophthalmologist who examined them all. Many received glasses and some underwent surgery. Continued follow-up is needed.
The cost of examinations and subsequent treatment is significant. We would therefore like to establish a programme with one or more ophthalmologists able to spend five to ten days a year on site. They could also assess children under two who are born with severe sight problems and need specialist care in their first months of life.
